I offer a number of photography classes as well as one on
one instruction. Below is a list of the classes that are currently
being offered.
- Beginning
Photography
This course offers an introduction to the 35mm Single Lens Reflex camera.
You will learn everything from the basics of choosing and loading film to
principles of controlling exposure. Participants will get a chance to use
color and black and white film ad well as get an introduction to the black
and white darkroom. This course also provides information on seeing photographically.
If you are starting out with a new 35mm SLR camera or just want to learn
techniques to help you improve your photography, this is a great class to
start out in. You will need a 35mm SLR camera for this class. A limited amount
of equipment is available for rent.
- Beginning
Darkroom
The Beginning Darkroom class offers detailed instruction on working in the
black and white darkroom. You will learn how to process your own film and
print your own photographs as well as working safely in the darkroom. This
is a hands on class where you have the opportunity to learn as you work.
You will learn proper darkroom procedures and basic printing techniques such
as dodging, burning and contrast control. We will also explore options in
hand coloring, toning and presentation of the final print. You will either
need a supply of black and white negatives or shoot at least a few rolls
of black and white film for this course.
- Basic
View Camera
This course is an introduction to large format photography. We will focus
on principles and techniques of view camera operation. Learning the view
camera can be a long and frustrating experience without basic understanding
of camera operation. With this class and the hours of field experience, the
view camera can be understood and enjoyed. Topics covered in this class include
view camera operation (swings, tilts, shifts, rise and fall), exposure calculation,
film choice and film development procedures. You can use any format view
camera for this course.
- The
Zone System
An introduction to the zone system as created by Ansel Adams. Through this
course we will explore the concepts and techniques of the zone system and
apply them in a practical way toward our own photography. This black and
white photographic procedure will be explored thoroughly from previsulization
to exposure placement and calculation to film development techniques. All
lectures are accompanied by hands on application of the technique. Any format
camera can be used in this course but large format photography is particularly
well suited for zone system application.
